Lucy brushed a curl off her forehead as she sat across from Kenny Smith, a young attorney who represented Jacoby’s neighbor, Forest.

Both Forest and Jacoby were on their second cans of soda and looked pretty amped up.

Lucy decided to start with Jacoby. “You told Detective Jule and me that there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for the fact that Social Security checks were sent to your address even though the recipient did not live there. We’re all ears.”

Jimmy sat next to her, setting down his cup of coffee forcefully. He seemed to be trying to intimidate them, but, Lucy thought, he just looked like a fool. The coffee splashed out because it was too full, and he burned his hand. He shook off the pain with a grimace.

Normally, a suspect would make some comment or laugh. But, Lucy had to admit to herself, these people seemed like decent guys eager to get the truth out there.

“If I may,” the lawyer began, “I already know all the ins and outs of this case because we first worked on it a few years back.”

“I don’t care who gives it,” Lucy said, “but I want an explanation.”

The lawyer cleared his throat. “Alright, here’s the situation. About four years ago, Forest had his mailbox bashed in by vandals.”

“Couple punk kids,” he said, “and that’s when everything went wrong.”
